May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month Known as the silent disease, osteoporosis often has no signs or symptoms until a fracture occurs. Each year, there are more than 1.5 million fractures resulting from osteoporosis, which is the excessive loss of calcium and matrix of the bones. Females are more at risk for osteoporosis, as are those with a family history of osteoporosis, an inactive lifestyle, a diet low in calcium and dairy products, fair skin, and/or a low body weight or small frame. People who smoke cigarettes and are more than 50 years old are at a greater risk, as are women with early menopause.
Five Steps To Bone Health and Osteoporosis Prevention Provided by the National Osteoporosis Foundation
Eat Right: Get your daily recommended amounts of Calcium and Vitamin D. Exercise: Engage in regular weight-bearing and muscle strengthening exercise. Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle: Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Talk To Your Healthcare Provider: Talk to your healthcare provider about bone health. Get Tested: Have a bone density test and take medication when appropriate.
An individualized physical therapy treatment program can help those impacted by Osteoporosis. A proactive treatment approach provides weight-bearing exercise programs, which are essential for normal bone development and maintenance. Our trained physical therapists work closely with a patient's physician to create a specific treatment and education program.
Program Offering
Lymphedema Treatment Available Lymphedema treatment is for chronic swelling of all or portions of an extremity or trunk which cannot be controlled or significantly eliminated by medication, R.I.C.E., or exercise. Lymphedema can limit mobility, joint flexibility and normal functional activities at home and in the community. The onset of Lymphedema frequently follows S/P breast and prostate cancer diagnoses and associated treatments. However, it can also develop after a joint replacement trauma or an infection in one of the extremities. Our clinical team is fully trained and staffed to provide appropriate treatment, including lymphatic drainage massage and gradient decompression wrapping. For more information please call our facility in Weston (954-659-8986) or Hollywood (954-986-2299).
TMJ Therapy Temporomandibular (TMJ) syndrome occurs when the jaw joint does not move properly; which can lead to pain, popping/clicking, and limited ability to open or close mouth. It is estimated that 10 million Americans suffer from Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome. Research shows that with splinting and proper therapeutic intervention in the early stages of the disorder, the prognosis for return to normal pain free function is good.
Vestibular Therapy Program Our program evaluates patients with persistent dizziness or disequilibrium. Individuals who complain of dizziness, vertigo and motion sensitivity who do not demonstrate spontaneous resolution of symptoms in 3-4 weeks of onset are potential candidates for Vestibular Rehabilitation. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a type of physical therapy used to treat vertigo. The goal of treatment is to minimize dizziness, improve balance, and prevent falls by restoring normal function of the vestibular system.
